HISTORY

In 1997, after serving since 1990 with YWAM Greater New York, David and Robin Van Fleet founded Street LIFE Ministries. Since then, SLM has coordinated opportunities for thousands of volunteers to serve all segments of New York City with a holistic approach that meets emotional, spiritual, and physical needs.

An essential part of that approach is SLM’s Mobile Resource Center Program, which was officially launched in 1998. We began our program with a 1979 Step-Van that was donated to David in 1997. In 2013, after 15 years of bringing it to the streets, God provided a newer vehicle! We were able to donate the old one to another ministry similar to SLM in Tennessee and it now serves as a blessing to a ministry down there. As of fall 2013, we launched out with a newer 2003 Freightliner, bigger and better than our original step van, equipped with much more to meet the needs of those we serve. Our Mobile Resource Center stations weekly at Tompkins Square Park on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to provide food, clothes, hygiene kits, rehab and program referrals, love, and friendship to those in need. David has been reaching out to the hurting and homeless at Tompkins for over 20 years.

Prayer Stations had been pioneered in the 90’s and were quickly integrated into SLM’s vision to reach New York City. Before founding SLM, David and Robin had effective experience reaching the lost through Prayer Stations. Whether it was making available free Bibles, praying with a stranger, or engaging in a deep conversation about life and God, they knew Prayer Stations would be an essential tool wherever they went. Consequently, they are still a main method of outreach for SLM today.

Numerous other outreaches have become an annual part of SLM’s service. Each summer, SLM facilitates a Summer International Outreach. Venezuela, Jamaica, Haiti, Ukraine, and Brazil (now annually since 1997) have been outreach destinations. For over twenty years Worship Warfare Week has brought music and drama to the parks of NYC to mobilize the Body of Christ and speak hope to the lost. David’s first New Year’s Eve Outreach was in 1991, and now SLM facilitates this outreach, hosting Christmas caroling at Rockefeller Plaza, serving free hot chocolate, and offering prayer to the masses gathered in Times Square.

SLM’s vision for 24/7 prayer and worship birthed the Queens House of Prayer – Flushing in 2003. Prayer and worship gatherings are open to all and held throughout the week, addressing varying themes such as the youth, America, and human trafficking.

David has served the Body of Christ for over 30 years, and has been invited to many different churches, conferences, and gatherings both nationally and internationally, to challenge and encourage others with an uncompromising message of the Gospel. He shares on a wide variety of subjects but the underlying theme is “to go into all the world, share the Gospel, and make disciples.”
